We continue our study of 1 John this month. This month’s studies will carry us through some of the central themes of the epistle. John warns his readers against the love of the world that is passing away, alerts them to the many antichrists who have arisen in the last hour, and assures them that the anointing of the Spirit they have received from the Holy One is sufficient to guard them in the truth. He sets before them the marvelous status that they enjoy as children of God, marked by holiness of life and love for the brethren. Finally, he turns to the testing of the spirits, calling believers to examine every claim of spiritual authority by the Apostolic confession of Jesus Christ come in the flesh.

These passages develop what commentators have long called the three “tests of life” by which authentic Christian faith may be examined: the test of doctrine, the test of holiness, and the test of love. They are not three separate tests but three aspects of one renewed life, each flowing from union with the Christ whom John proclaims. As we walk through them this month, may the Lord deepen our assurance that we are indeed His.
