In this video, Dr. J.V. Fesko highlights the simplicity, clarity, and unity of the new covenant.
What’s so new about the new covenant? Well, ever since God made His promise of the gospel in Genesis 3:15 to Adam and Eve—that the seed of the woman would crush the head of the serpent—God has progressively unfolded His plan of redemption throughout redemptive history. And so, we can say that the promise of the gospel begins in Genesis 3:15, and it lasts until the end, until Christ returns.
That being said, as that promise progressively unfolds throughout God’s successive covenants, it finds its climax in the new covenant. And we can say that the new covenant brings us simplicity, clarity, and unity. It brings simplicity from the fact that things have been simplified in that there are no more sacrifices and no more ceremonies in the temple. And that it is simplified in terms of the comparison to the Old Testament to the New. It brings clarity because in clarity, no longer do we have all of those sacrifices and things, but everything comes to us in the person and work of Christ, and we worship in spirit and in truth. And then it brings unity because in unity, no longer are the gospel promises restricted exclusively to Israel as God gave them in past history. But now He has brought unity between Jew and gentiles so that the people of God are one united in Christ.
