In this video, Dr. David Strain describes how the Psalms act as a model for Christians in bringing our emotions to God.
John Calvin famously said that the Psalms are an anatomy of every part of the soul. So the whole array of human emotion can be found in the Psalms. Sometimes actually rather shockingly, Christians reading through the Psalms discover that there are psalms that are very bleak that seem to have no hopeful resolution. The psalmist crying out how long from a place of pain and desperation. Others ascend to the very heights of joy and human gratitude. Others face very directly the reality of suffering. Others lament and grieve over sin. And so the Psalms model for us how to not suppress or hide or run from our emotional lives but to bring not just our head but our hearts to God, to pour out all that we feel as well as all that we think to Him. He has made us whole people mind and heart and body and all of it matters and we’re to bring it all to Him and the Psalms teach us how to do that faithfully and well.
