Having given us three solid tests—love, belief in the incarnation, and personal holiness—through which the Spirit works to give us assurance, John concludes his first epistle by emphasizing just how interrelated and inseparable these tests are. As we are reminded of these aspects of true faith for the final time in the letter, we will see how we overcome the world by our confession.

Throughout these studies, John emphasizes the confidence and assurance that flow from God’s love. We will see how true faith overcomes the world, and at the close of the month we will conclude our study of 1 John.

Before finishing his letter, John gives several applications of his teaching to our lives. Therefore, we will also look at how assurance works itself out in prayer, accountability, and worship. God grants assurance to His people so that we “may rejoice in the hope of the glory of God, which hope shall never make them ashamed” (Westminster Confession of Faith 18.1). May the Spirit’s words through the Apostle give us reason to rejoice anew in the hope of the glory of God.
