The book of Acts is the story of the continuing acts of the Lord Jesus Christ through His Apostles, for He commissioned the Apostles and sent His Holy Spirit to empower them for ministry (Matt. 28:18–20; Acts 1:8; 2:32–33). We have seen many evidences of Christ’s work thus far in our study of Acts, including Apostolic miracles and the conversion of thousands. But we will see His work in an even more powerful way this month as our devotions will go through Luke’s narrative of the gospel’s movement beyond Judea.
Acts 8:4–9:43 describes how Jesus fulfilled His promise to carry the message of salvation from Jerusalem and Judea to Samaria and to the ends of the earth (1:8). This important section tells us about Philip’s ministry to the Samaritans and the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch as the gospel reached those who were not ethnically Jewish. We will also read the account of the conversion of Saul and how Jesus set him apart as the Apostle to the gentiles. Toward the end of the month, Dr. R.C. Sproul’s teaching series Hard Sayings of the Apostles and Hard Sayings of the Bible will help us better understand the Apostles’ teaching.
These verses parallel the themes of the studies each week. We encourage you to hide them in your heart so that you may not sin against the Lord:
