In every generation, God has had witnesses to the truth. This is what we would expect from the speaking Lord, for once He determines to reveal Himself, He cannot help but ensure that a witness to Him always remains present in creation.

The Lord has maintained continual testimony to His character in the physical world (Rom. 1:20). With respect to the plan of salvation, He has testified to His redemption in all ages. He has done this by inspiring the written words of the Scriptures and by sustaining His church to proclaim that inspired Word. God’s testimony to Himself in the church and in the Word will be a special focus of our study of Acts this month.

We will cover Acts 6:1–8:3, looking first at the call of seven qualified men to meet the physical needs of early church widows and thereby serve as tangible expression of God’s care for the most vulnerable people. We will then move on to a speech from one of those qualified men, Stephen, after he was arrested for preaching the gospel. Stephen’s speech gives an overview of the history of salvation, highlighting many of the witnesses who have declared God’s truth to us. May we follow in their train.

These verses parallel the themes of the studies each week. We encourage you to hide them in your heart so that you may not sin against the Lord:
