When the angels announced the birth of Jesus and right after He was born, Joseph and Mary were told many things. Two statements stand out. First, the angel told Joseph that he must name the child born to Mary “Jesus,” because He would save His people from their sins (Matt. 1:21). Second, Mary heard from Simeon that a sword would pierce her soul (Luke 2:34–35). These words testified that Jesus would bring salvation in a manner that would be painful not only to our Lord but also to those who loved Him. These statements ultimately had in view the crucifixion of our Savior.
The gospel of Luke has been building to the events surrounding our Lord’s death on the cross, and our study of Luke 22:1–23:46 this month will take us through the Last Supper, arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus. We will explore the role of the human agents as Jesus suffered to atone for our sin, the meaning of the Lord’s Supper, the injustice of Christ’s legal proceedings, the sovereignty of Jesus as He willingly gave His life for us, and more. In all this, let us remember that God worked through these events to reveal His glory by redeeming undeserving sinners.
These verses parallel the themes of the studies each week. We encourage you to hide them in your heart so that you may not sin against the Lord:
