One of the most common views about Jesus that we can find in the wider culture is that He was a good teacher. Even those who know very little about our Lord’s person, His work, and even His teaching will often have no problem agreeing that Christ is one of the greatest teachers who ever lived.

Certainly, it is true that Jesus is a good teacher. Yet He is far more than that, for He is the incarnate Lord who lived, died, and rose again for the sake of our salvation (John 1:1–18; 10:1–30; 1 Tim. 3:16). We cannot separate His teaching from the rest of His mission. Without His person and work, His teaching would not have authority to define the faith or reveal the way of salvation.

This month we continue our study of Luke’s gospel, walking through chapters 5–6. The authority of our Savior and His teaching is on full display in these chapters as He efficaciously calls disciples, forgives sins, interprets and applies the Sabbath law, makes Himself the center of saving faith, and more. We will see how Jesus manifested His divine authority in His instruction, confirming it through miracles, as He conducted His earthly ministry.

These verses parallel the themes of the studies each week. We encourage you to hide them in your heart so that you may not sin against the Lord:
