In redeeming Israel from slavery in Egypt, God was not merely granting them liberation from earthly bondage, though He did achieve that. Rather, the Lord had the pure worship of Him, the one true God, in view as He saved His people from Pharaoh. As the Lord said when He called Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt, the Israelites would be released to serve Him (Ex. 3:12). They would exchange service to a harsh master for one whose burden is light. They would be freed to fulfill the purpose for which God created mankind—the true worship of the true Creator of all things.

This month, our daily studies will take us through Exodus 26–29, which record God’s instructions for the tabernacle and the garments and ordination of the old covenant priests. These chapters provide guidance for true worship under the old covenant, and we can learn much from this section of Scripture today with respect to new covenant worship, for while the outward form of new covenant worship differs from old covenant worship, the substance is the same. We will also see how these worship instructions point us to Christ, the true tabernacle and high priest of God’s people.
