Human beings cannot live without laws. Every culture and society in human history has developed legal codes in order to protect people from harm and provide guidance for what to do when individuals have hurt others. Without law, civilization is impossible.

Since humans are fallen, our legal codes are always imperfect even if God’s common grace makes it possible for humanity’s laws to restrain some evil. God’s law, however, has no flaws. What He has revealed is sufficient to guide us in pleasing Him and in showing us what righteousness looks like in practice. When God delivered His commandments to Israel, He provided a lasting guide for holiness.

Continuing our study of Exodus this month, we will examine chapters 22–25, which includes much of the law that God gave to old covenant Israel. Some of these laws do not apply to us in the same way that they did before Christ came, but we still derive lasting principles from them for the church today. In addition to looking at what we can learn from these laws, we will consider the broader biblical teaching on the law with the help of Dr. R.C. Sproul’s teaching series God’s Law and the Christian.
