In October, we wrapped up the section of the book of Judges that deals with the individuals who delivered Israel from oppression. In the passages we will study this month and next, the author of Judges focuses in on the manner in which the people were living. His assessment is not good—without a king to guide them, he says, everyone did what was right in his own eyes. And the incidents recorded here prove him out.

In the first, crass idolatry takes root in the tribe of Dan. The people abandon the true faith and adopt new ways of worshiping. In our time, many are drawn to groups outside of historic Christianity. Therefore, we will spend time at midmonth examining traits of today’s cults with the help of the Ligonier audio series Cults and Christianity, by Dr. R.C. Sproul and Tim Couch.
